179 Postpartum Uterus Causing Mechanical Bowel Obstruction

Abstract Background Intestinal obstruction is a common surgical emergency. Common causes of mechanical large bowel include malignancy, sigmoid volvulus, and diverticular disease. Due to the risk ischaemia perforation, requires urgent recognition treatment prevent morbidity mortality. Case Presentation 35-year-old female developed nausea, vomiting abdominal pain two days post emergency cesarian section at 39+5 weeks gestation. An X-Ray showed distended loops with transition point was diagnosed on CT. She referred team for further management flexible sigmoidoscopy under general anaesthetic performed decompression. Results The patient reviewed following day. asymptomatic had opened her bowels. discharged from follow-up this stage successful able return home healthy baby. Conclusions Mechanical compression postpartum uterus rare cause obstruction, just one previous case documented in literature. Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction (Ogilvie syndrome) recognised complication, more after an important differential similar options. recommend diagnostic imagining includes x-ray and/or CT scan early referral consideration interventional or patients presenting symptoms period. Conservative should lateral decubitus position.
